Spotlight Series: Rhys Knight

Legacy Club shines a light on some of our members to see what makes them and their business tick.

We spoke to Rhys Knight, Co-Founder of Prospect Knight.

Please tell us a little bit about you the person (not you the business owner): Anything creative interests me, whether it's music, fashion or art. I am not one to sit still, and I have a big passion for health and fitness. My main activities are s&c, cycling and swimming, and I hope to compete in a few triathlons next year.
I have two young boys who keep me flat out when I am not working.
We holiday a lot in Ibiza, and my dream is to live there for periods in the future.

Describe your business in less than 30 words: We help businesses acquire customers and keep them. We do this through performance marketing and automated CRM strategies. Underpinning all of this is data and creative.

What industry or sector does your business fall in to?: Marketing

What did you do before you started your business?: Leaving school at 16, I went straight into an apprenticeship in the print and direct mail industry working my way from the machine room up into the sales team. To strengthen my digital marketing knowledge, I took a step back and did consultancy work before forming Prospect Knight.

What have been the biggest struggles that you have encountered, and what did you do to overcome them?: We grew fast, and the lack of processes made us unorganised.

We wanted to please all our clients, and the negative of this meant we were overserving all of them. Scaling any further with more staff would make the problem worse.

We solved this by introducing an improved sales process where we asked better questions to determine the right support and clear scope of work. This allowed us to push back if things crept out of scope. We also educated and trained the teams to manage clients' expectations. We rolled out a timesheet platform called harvest to monitor things internally more closely

Have you had any external investment to date?: No

What has been the impact of COVID-19 on your business and did you make any changes, or pivots?: Covid allowed us to test how we can operate remotely. It worked successfully for us, and we now ask that people be in the office at least twice weekly. Office time allows for collaboration and team huddles. WFH allows for focus work.

Do you struggle with, or have you found any of the following barriers to your business growth?: Leadership Capacity

Do you have any business hero's, if so, who are they?:

Financial Rewards or Business Awards?: Financial Rewards

What was the last book you read?: Win without pitching Blair Enns

Tell us something totally unique about your business: We offer both performance and retention strategies combined. Most in our industry offer either or.

Finally, please tell us what we can look forward to with your business in the next 12 months.: We want to expand our offering and plan to grow our data and creative teams within our business.
